The ski slopes in Yllas have seen a lot of changes over the last couple of years with new and improved restaurants, storage space and changes and improvements to the ski shop. Yllas is also home to the largest runs in Finland with 62 slopes and 30 lifts. The lifts are now also new and improved increasing the capacity to carry more skiers. The ski slopes also run ski schools for families, individuals, and children and with experienced staff, the ski school has an excellent reputation.

Why not try Husky dog safari, where you will zoom through the forests of Lapland with 6 husky dogs pulling you along at great speed. The Husky dogs absolutely love the thrill of chasing through the forests and you will get the chance to see some of the adorable husky puppies. You could also visit the Konijankka wildlife park where you can see some of the great animals and let the children have fun down the sledge run whilst you toast sausages upon the open fire which is surrounded by reindeer rugs.

There is also lots more activities to become involved in, cross country skiing is another activity where you don’t need to pre book but just go along and enjoy the wonderful tracks and Yllas National park which is breathtakingly beautiful. Christmas 2010 Lapland holidays

Christmas is fast approaching and holidys to magical Lapland are once again in mind. Lapland log cabins are an ideal place to spend your Lapland holiday and are comfortable, home from homes. Our cabin sleeps 6 comfortably and has a dining area, lounge area and has full cooking facilities. Activities in and around Akaslompolo are nearly all within walking distance unless you are wanting to travel to the ski slopes which are only a ten minute bus ride away and buses run every 10 minutes from the bus stops not far from the cabin. Other activities that you may want to travel to are Lainio snow village and the the wildlife park. The wildlife park is within walking distance but Lainio snow village is about 1.5 hours drive from the cabin, shorter if you travel by car. You can either hire a snowmobile for this trip or go on an organised trip where they will include the snow village in your trip.

The history of the snowmobile

The snowmobile has been around for some years but the models we see and use now are much improved from what was once in use. Years ago snowmobiles were heavy and clumsy and for this reason their speed was restricted to only 20 m. p.h. Today snowmobiles are much improved and are designed for travelling over tracks with snow, frozen lakes and rivers and are still not really designed to travel over really deep snow. In Lapland snowmobiles are used for tourism and you can go on many snowmobile trips to various attractions in Lapland but they are also used by the locals for helping in the herding of the Reindeers.

The Northern Lights in Lapland

The best time to see the Northern lights is between Spetember and March and it is common for them to be viewed around Christmas time and at New year. There are many trips you can go on where you can seek out the Northern Lights but really you can see them any where, whilst you are out skiing, cross country skiing or just walking home from a bar or restaurant,

The Northern Lights are vibrant colours of green and yellow dancing accross the night sky and they truly are a spectacular sight. The twilight time in Lapland where the sun does not rise above the horizon makes Lapland an ideal place to see and enjoy the Northern lights. Years ago the locals had all sorts of theories as to the representation of the Northern Lights, they were said to be fox’s tails dancing in the night sky and a lot of importance was placed on the meaning of the Northern Lights that combine to make the beliefs, local customs and traditions of the people of Lapland.

Christmas Eve Cross country Skiing

Cross country skiing is well in force by November and the first track is open on the 1st October. By December most of the tracks are open and the locals will be out at all times of the day Cross country skiing. Christmas Eve is a special time in Lapland, a visit to Lapp village to see santa, a cross country ski under the stars finished off by a hot sauna. Early to bed and a sleepless night for the children as they wait for Santa. There really is nothing better than waking up in Lapland on Christmas Eve and watching the children open their presents whilst the twinkly snow falls outside. December in Lapland sees lots of snow and you will certainly feel the Christmas spirit and Christmas in Lapland is not just for the children but just as special for the adults. You can spend the day how you like, you can go on one of the many Christmas trips such as the husky dog sleds, a visit to Lapp village followed by a slap up meal or you can just spend the day in and around the cabin where the children can play in the snow, build snowmen or an igloo and just enjoy the most magical time of your lives in Lapland

Santa is on his way

I so miss Lapland now that we sre home but I have also noticed the weather cooling down and thoughts of frosty Lapland come to mind. Those husky dogs will be zooming through the snow capped forests, Santa will be sturring from sleep and the skiers will be out in force. How lovely to be in Lapland for the first snow, when the first flakes fall softly. The first snows arrive in late October, early November the snows will not stick but by the middle of November the frosty snow will win and begin to collect around the forests and streets of Lapland

Our journey home after our holiday in Yllas Lapland

We spent the next couple of days relaxing whilst the children played in the forests of Lapland, I took the time to pick some fresh wild berries that grow everywhere around the cabin in the undergrowth (simply delicious). We hired some bikes and went on a ride and the children simply enjoyed themselves in and around the cabin. Our last night (Tuesday 24th August) was spent at the local pizza place down by the supermarket. The pizzas are beautiful and the restaurant was very quiet except for a couple of locals. I took some photos on our last night of Yllas fell and the ski slopes from the restaurant where we were eating and reflected on our lovely holiday and all the things we had done.

I never really want to come home from Lapland because it really does feel like my second home, I just love everything about Lapland, the food, the people, the countryside and their values and traditions. I always come home feeling like I can’t wait to go back again.
