Ruka

Ruka And Kuusamo - nature's playgrounds, located just outside Lapland in northern Finland, are fun, beautiful and inspiring places to be, no matter what the season.

In the winter months we have the ski resort of Ruka, 29 groomed slopes to cater to all levels from designated safe area for beginners to an extreme boardcross park and street. The ski slopes are illuminated in the dark winter months meaning you can ski till 10pm down slopes lined with Dali-esque pine trees that are bent over under the weight of the snow, twinkling under the floodlights.  It's a truly magical experience.

Ruka is the perfect place to bring children who get their own ski school classes, free use of the lifts and ski equipment and even their own adventure ski run with obstacles, exciting things to discover and a reindeer park with real live reindeer right next to the slope. It's a winter wonderland of fun and thrills with something to suit everyone.  Snowshoeing through pristine, silent forests; taking a slow, gentle ride in a reindeer sleigh; a breathless race in a husky sled; racing ice carts around a track on a frozen lake or accelerating through the forests and over frozen lakes on the back of a snowmobile, all of it to the beautiful backdrop of thick powdery snow, frozen trees that twinkle in the sunlight and the northern lights casting an eerie glow as they undulate across the night sky.  And, of course, let us not forget that Santa lives close by and no trip is complete without a visit to his home where every child is made to feel like a long lost grandchild.  They bake cookies and buns with Mrs Claus, sing songs, draw pictures, sit on Santa's knee and chat, listen to his stories and play with the elves.

In the summer months the snow melts, the rivers and lakes open up once more and the forests come back to life with reindeer, moose, bear, wolverines and all manner of creatures, great and small.  Ruka ski resort changes into a beautiful hiking centre, it's ski slopes now covered in grass and grazing reindeer, mountain bike trails and hiking trails taking you to it's peak and surrounding area.

Kuusamo is home to the world famous Karhunkieros, an 80km hiking trail through the Oulanka National park, a protected area of amazing beauty and scenery with free to use huts along the trail to sleep in at night.  If hiking is not your thing there is canoeing, white water rafting, ATV safaris, river floating, mountain biking, bear watching, fishing, bird watching, nature photography, golf, horse riding or just relaxing outside your log cabin, looking out over the lake and soaking in the idyllic silence and profound beauty.

Ruka and Kuusamo, a paradise that will keep you coming back year after year.
