Konijankan animal park.
Situated approximately 30 mins walk from Lapland Log Cabin Konijankan animal park is a place definately worth a visit. Not only can you enjoy the array of animals at the park such as Llamas, native breeds of goars and sheep, Lapland cows, horses, ostriches and Mangalitza pigs from Hungary but there have recently been new additions to the park in the form of two very large but friendly Camels. After a walk round the park have yourselves a warm by the outdoor open fire and cook your own sausages whcih you can purchase from the park shop. There is a fantastic snow sledge run for the children and the adults if you fancy a go. Children can spend unlimited time with plenrty of sledges for all. The park shop does an array of snacks and the most wonderful hot chocolate, tea or coffee, just right for your walk home. Husky Safari
This is brilliant a 9km Trek with a team of husky dogs, you sit with your family in the sledge covered with a warm blanket and race through the forest, a truly amazing experience. These husky dogs will run and run. You can opt for a long trek with the Lapland husky dogs or you can opt instead for a shorter run. A typical husky dog ride would involve a trek through Laplands mountanous forests to a Log cabin in the centre of the forest where you will have hot berry juice and buscuits and listen to a facinating talk with one of the interesting guides. You will then board youe sled for the wonderful ride back to the husky centre where you can stop and wonder around admiring the Husky puppies whcih are absolutely adorable. SnowMobiles
Snowmobiles are one of those things you will never grow out of. They are just so much fun. When you turn up for your snowmobile adventure you are shown exactly what to do and given all the correct equipment that keeps you warm. If you have kids don't worry as a large sledge with sides is attached to the back which you partner and children can lie in while you drive. In the sledge you will find warm blankets, so you can sit back and enjoy the lapland scenery. You can go on an organised snowmobile trip where there will be a group of you and two guides or if you feel brave enough you can hire a snowmobile and venture out on your own. You can obtain a map from the guides and visit many places such as the ice hotel and many other small cafes and food outlets dotted in the middle of the Lapland forests. Yllas in Lapland is located right next to a lake approximately 500 Meters from the log cabin. You can ice fish on the lake. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout, arctic char, brown trout. Why not visit the amazing Lainio ice hotel. Its approximately 20 minutes drive from the cabin by taxi or why not hire a snowmobile and travel through the snow capped forests, the journey would take about 1 hour. The Lainio ice hotel is an adventure you will never forget, as well as its own restaurant the ice hotel has its own bar and activities such as snow slides and an ice maize. The ice hotel has 20 Igloo bedrooms and 7 ice suites. If you are brave enough to spend the night in the amazing Ice hotel make sure you are snug in your sleeping bag because the temperatures range from 0 to -5 degrees. The ice hotel has the privalidge to have the largests ice bar in Europe. The glasses are of course made from ice and if you fancy a wonder outside you will find illuminated ice sculptures, there is a big ice slide and an amazing ice chapel. I have mentioned before that it is perfectly reasonable to book your activites when you arrive in Lapland if you want to, because Lapland is largely at the moment uncommercialised it is easy and straight forward to book your trip as and when you want them as opposed to prior to your arrival. Snow Fun Safaris offer an extensive range of activities and you can pick up a copy of the Yllas Times paper from Destination Lapland which is located approximately ten minutes walk from the cabin. Destination Lapland is also there to help with any problems or information you require. The Yllas times has a weekly programme of activities which it will be running for any one particular week. The following are examples of the activities that may be on offer during the week of your stay.
Snow What
This Snowmobile trip is the most suitable for first timers. It is an opportunity to experience the beautiful and magical scenery of Lapland from the comfort of your snowmobile. The trek is a gentle cruise covering about 20 kilometers stopping on the way of course for a refreshing coffee and doughnut in the warm wilderness hut. The duration of the trip is approximately 2 hours. For a family of four there is the option for a snowmobile with a sledge. Up to three persons can travel in the sledge which is ideal if you have little ones.
Cross Country Skiing School For Families
You will accompany your guides to the Akaslompolo Ski Shop to choose your ski equipment. You will be given full instructions on how to fit the cross country skis, you will then be taken onto a flat surface to have a practice run. When everyone feels comfortable you will head for the cross country ski tracks. The duration for this trip is approximately two hours. There is also information for those of you wanting to hire your own skis and of course then you can pick and choose the duration of your skiing. If you cross country ski independently you only have to pay for the hire of your skis which is a small price, you do not have to pay any extra to enter the ski tracks.
Snoeshoe trip to Yllas
Years ago the ancient fins believe it or not used to roam the forests in wooden skis, these days things have moved on a little and we now use the ever popular snowshoes. The trip takes you approximately 3 kilometers up through the rugged scenery of Yllas. The snowshoes are fun and worth a try, this trip includes a stop off at the Forest hut and a hot drink and bun. The whole day takes about 2.5 hours and that includes transport to and from the village.
Snow What
Again this activity in suitable for first timers and for those who have never driven a snowmobile before. The ride is about 20 kilometers long and takes approximately 2 hours. You will be given instrucctions on how to drive and control the snowmobile and included in the trip is a hot drink and a bun. Again younger children can travel in a sleigh pulled by the snowmobile where they will be snuggly warm wrapped in Reindeer
Lainio Snow Village
Lainio Snow village is about 35km from Akaslompolo and is situated in the middle of the woods. It is well known for it's snow castle and snow art attracting people from all over the world. You will travel to the snow village on snowmobile and after spending time in the snow Hotel you will have a light lunch in Lainio inn. The trip takes about 5 hours to complete.
Maybe the Northern Lights
You will travel into the wildes of Lapland to observe the truly magical experience of the Northern Lights. You will stop off halfway and have a hot drink by an open forest. The duration of this trip is 2.5 hours.
Winter Swimming under the Northern Lights
If you are brave enough this really is a great trip. You will pack towels and drive on snowmobiles to an area calles Luosu where there will be a warm sauna awaiting you. After warming up in the sauna you will be encouraged to jump into the hole in the ice, known as the plunge pool. The experience will be cold but extremely exhilerating, You can swim a couple of meters before hot footing it back to the sauna. You will finish the trip off by having a snack by the open fire before heading back to Akaslompolo.
The Magic of Old Lapland
You will travel to the largest coulee lake in Scandinavia. You will see for yourself the force of the water as it melted after the last ice age and you will hear how the people of Lapland lived and survived in days gone by. The trip covers about 70 kms and will take 5 hours.
